Cosfest VI (Semi Finals)

7th July 2007, an interesting combination (7-7-7), even of more interest is the Cosfest Competition. Held in Ngee Ann City, right in the heart of Singapore’s Orchard Road. This is the semi finals leg with major Cosplay contestants vying for the top prize. What is Cosplay?

Cosplay (????, kosupure), a portmanteau of the English words “costume” and “roleplay”, is a Japanese subculture centered on dressing as characters from manga, anime, tokusatsu, and video games, and, less commonly, Japanese live action television shows, fantasy movies, or Japanese pop music bands. However, in some circles, “cosplay” has been expanded to mean simply wearing a costume. In Japan, “cosplay” as a hobby is usually an end unto itself. Like-minded people gather to see others’ costumes, show off their own elaborate handmade creations, take lots of pictures, and possibly participate in best costume contests.

The competition consists of 8 teams. Each taking turns to do a skit on-stage. Other times were really spent with the photographers covering the events. I might say, they can really pose.

Guest of Honor was Singapore Minister Mentor-Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, whom gave a short speech to spur all young Singaporeans to pursue their dreams and visions. Being at the same first row with MM Lee, I was able to catch very close up looks with this great man, and of course wonderful shots of him and the other ministers e.g. Pro. Koo, Miss Indranee Rajah.

All in all, the competition went on smoothly with me enjoying myself, and of course not forgetting the winning Cosplay team for Cosfest VI – The Golden Experience (semi finals)
